The Bowflex PR1000 Overview

When it comes to home gyms the Bowflex PR1000 is the hottest selling anywhere in the market place. The PR1000 is the entry level home gym built by Bowflex. For everything it has it gives you the most value for the money you will be spending.

It is so popular because of the high ratings it gets from all its customers and users. They also get excited at how nicely it is priced. The Bowflex PR1000 offers almost 40 exercises for the body. This wonderful machine has several patents including for its resistance rod technology. This challenges you to a great workout.

If you have never experienced resistance rods before then get ready to find all those muscles you never knew existed.
I had the experience to use the PR1000 for a few weeks at a buddies place and was able to take notes so that I could write a review for anyone considering buying the Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym

What Is This About?

For almost everyone who thinks of home gyms they think of the name Bowflex. This industry known name is likely one of the biggest ever spoken of. since 1986 Bowflex has been designing and building industry changing exercise equipment.

They are known for their unique designs. Because of the uniqueness at the beginning many wondered if this would really work. People weren’t using weights in the traditional sense of the word. The muscles are challenged by something called resistance rods. The skeptics were quickly shut down and resistance rods quickly became the in thing and now they are even proven to be more effective then the weights from so many years ago. (I will talk more about resistance rods later in this review,)

as I said before the Bowflex PR1000 home gym is the entry model built by one of the leading companies in the world. It was designed and built for the everyday Joe. It’s not for the muscle-bound gigantic body builder type, but rather the person trying to stay in shape and build some tone to their muscles. For the everyday person there is no better deal in the industry. So now that you have a bit of a breakdown it is time to get a little more into this review.

Getting The PR1000 Set Up

As part of this review I wanted to include a little about set up. The reason for this is that I never see this help in other reviews. It’s going to look like a new piece of furniture in your home.

It is actually quite simple to set this great piece of equipment up. There isn’t too much to be aware of. The home gym comes with great step by step instructions and should only take a couple hours to set up.and be ready for you to start exercising on.

The set up is easy but before doing that make sure you have a big enough area for your work out because you aren’t going far with it after its all set up. For the exact measurements needed just look up a bit in the specifics of the Bowflex PR1000 home gym. The nice thing to remember about this great fitness product is that it does fold up after use. So with a little planning if you set it up in the right place it can easily be folded and stored after use.

Some Options For Exercise

The Bowflex PR1000 offers close to 40 different exercises for you to make a selection from. The nice thing is that there are exercises for all the muscle groups. This is exactly what you want to achieve out of a home workout apparatus. Below I have tried to put together some exercise options that you have with your home gym.

Chest

    • Downward bench press
    • Bench press
    • Upward bench press

Back

  • Extensions for the lower back.
  • Pulldown reverse grips
  • Pulldowns with a stiff arm.
  • Narrow pulldowns
  • Pulldowns from lateral positions
  • Seated lateral rows

Shoulders

  • Retractable scapular exercises
  • Raises of the front of your shoulder.
  • Shoulder presses.
  • Crossover seated rear deltoid rows.

Arms

  • Wristcurls from standing position
  • Bicep curls from seated position
  • Bicep curls from standing position.
  • Tricep extensions from a laying position.
  • Tricep push downs

Legs And Abs

  • Ab crunches from sitting position
  • Trunk rotations.
  • Hip abductions from sitting position.
  • Leg kickbacks from standing positions.
  • Calf raise.
  • Leg extension
  • Leg presses

In most cases many of the exercises have a number of different variations with the results being very different. A good example is the grips for the hands can also be used for ankles. Another cool thing is that the bench has several adjustments for different exercises and purposes.

Being that the Bowflex PR1000 is an entry level model many might not have a lot of experience with a piece of equipment like this. Well, no need to worry because along with the gym you get a manual with very detailed instructions on the different exercises. The plus with this is that there are many pictures as well.

So now you know about the exercises we talked about in the above literature. So next thing you should know is there is a full fledged built in rowing station. It doesn’t get better than this. If you are looking for an overall equal work out then you should have a rowing work out involved.

Balance is what you are looking for when it comes to an overall workout and this home gym offers you that. The best part is you don’t need several machines but can do everything on one machine. All the organs in your body are going to thank you for making such a great decision.

The greatest thing is how versatile this gym really is. That is very hard to find in a home gym priced well below a thousand bucks. That is one of the things that impressed me most because I had more than enough different workouts. Once everything is set up it only takes a few minutes to start doing the exercises and mastering them.

Resistance Rods

I believe in this review of the Bowflex PR1000 you should learn and have a bit of an understanding as to how the resistance technology works. I’m sure if you have been doing your homework then by now you know the resistance machines at Bowflex have nothing to do with traditional weight systems. We have touched briefly on this but now we are going to talk about Bowflexes patented technology system which is called resistance rods.

I’m going to try to make this as simple as possible because I am learning as well. When we talk resistance rods we are talking about plastic rods of different lengths that bend to different distances creating resistance. The thing you don’t need to worry about is snapping these rods. They aren’t the same plastic that you find on most items these days. They are a high tech, special composite built and designed for this kind of use. The rods are also built with different thickness which does a lot in developing the resistance. So like a weight set you add or lessen weights. The same is done here by which exercises you do with which rods.

So of course you have no clue how a bunch of plastic rods are going to give you the work out you so need. You also want to know why the claim that this is better than old school weight sets. I’m going to give you the story because I had to go look for the explanation when I was asking the same questions. The best thing is how the technology acts like an elastic band. The farther you pull the harder it gets. It’s easy at first and gets harder as you go. When we talk about resistance created by elastics we are talking about so many more muscular benefits than the traditional weights. Dr. Jim Stoppani did a case study comparing elastic and traditional weight technology. After a report as long as a novel below is the conclusion he came up with.

“A program using elastic tubing resistance can provide similar benefits to a program that uses free-weight resistance, such as increased muscle strength, increased muscle tone and size and decreased body fat. In addition, a program that uses elastic tubing resistance can also provide benefits that are not offered by free-weight resistance programs, such as more functional strength, better injury prevention, greater ability to change muscle emphasis during exercises, greater muscle power development and easier use.” Dr. Jim Stoppani, PhD

So from what we discovered is that the resistance rods have at least if not better benefits then the traditional free weight systems. I’m not going to lie, I was skeptical but now am truly impressed with everything I learned. The power rod system delivers a great challenge and I doubt I would ever go back. The one thing I would say is it does take a bit of getting used to when you first start using the resistance rods. The feeling is absolutely different then the resistance given to you by traditional weights. You don’t get the changes in the traditional weights. To change anything you need to stop and do it manually.

As the great Dr. Stoppani told us the resistance rod exercise is so much better for us because it builds the strength with the power. The best thing however is the resistance it provides and does it without too much pressure or strain on your body. This is great for anyone who has had any prior injuries and also for preventing injuries. All around the Bowflex PR1000 helps greatly by not making bad things worse and working towards helping everything about your fitness.

Let me explain the break down of this great piece of equipment a little. It has 210 pounds of weight resistance. In total the machine has 10 rods, 2 are 5 pounds, 2 are 10 pounds, 2 are 30 pounds and a couple at 50 pounds. the awesome thing about this is you can hook up any combination of these resistance rods. For the everyday guy just looking to get a full fitness work out this will always be more than enough. In fact most people will find a great challenge in this which will give them plenty of room to grow into.

Comfort, Strength and Quality

With the quality its hard to believe the Bowflex PR1000 is a starter home gym. However it shouldn’t be hard to believe since it is in the Bowflex family. They are very well-known for the best quality and great pricing. Most gyms around this price just tend to have the greatest quality like this piece of equipment. It’s so great to see that they take just as much pride in a $700.00 dollar gym as a $8000.00 dollar gym.

The frame is all built out of heavy-duty steel. The cables are high strength braided steel. The neat things is that the rods are even stronger than the steel. So when it comes to construction and durability you should have no worries. The seat is so comfortable, resistant to tears and offers great support. Well that was about the seat so now a little about the handles. Even these guys did a great job with the handles. Even though it seems such a small detail unlike so many others they made sure the handles work perfectly on this machine.

Any Negatives To The Bowflex PR1000?

At the end of the day there isn’t a lot bad to say about the Bowflex PR1000 home gym. I had the honor of testing it and loved it. It performed perfectly for what I need. I guess one small downfall is the fact that it can’t be upgraded. Even though it would be nice to add more resistance at this level most people wouldn’t need it anyways.

The thing to remember is that this is an entry level gym and not ment to turn you into a body builder. If you are just a normal every day guy looking to get a good workout then you can’t go wrong with the PR1000. There are other gyms that we can talk about at a later date if you are the person who needs something bigger and better.

What Is The Verdict?

The resistance rod technology works so well once you get used to it. You end up getting a great full body workout.
