Diabetes And Feet
Since was diagnosed a couple months ago I now know that diabetes and feet go together very tightly. I guess I should have known since my father had diabetes and ended up losing half of his foot as a result of poor care. So I have been paying close attention and through this article I would like to share with you 7 diabetes foot care tips.
When you come right down to it first it’s your eyes and secondly it’s your feet. These are the two things you really need to focus on and take care of. however today I’m not going to talk about your eyes and will focus on tips to take care of your feet now that you are a diabetic.
As a diabetic it is so very important that you take very good care of your feet and pay attention to anything going on. You need to watch for any sores, cuts, scratches and so forth because you really don’t want to end up with infection.
As a diabetic you can’t always count on things like infections to heal very well. So in so many diabetics like my father many diabetics end up with amputations. Lots of times it’s not only part of a foot but in many cases entire legs or both legs.
So below I am going to focus on making sure you have control with your diabetes and feet.
Diabetes Foot Care Tips
At least three times a day you need to really check your feet. You need to take your socks off and actually take a good look. You may not even realize it yet but in many cases diabetics have little to no feeling in their feet so they don’t even notice scratches, cuts or bumps. Now if these things don’t get caught it can be devastating.
I don’t know about you but at the end of the day I can’t stand feet. I can’t stand mine or anyone else s. The bad part about that is life is much easier with them so it’s pretty important to take care of them.
I know everyone loves to be bare feet. You would think that even around the house this should be a safe option. Well I regret to inform you that even walking barefoot in the house can lead to some very bad situations.
At the very minimum you should at least have socks on but for the best protection you are going to want to have slippers on to protect your feet. It’s all about safety and caution,
Remember one little cut, scrape or bump could end up leading to a lifetime of misery.
Remember you should be taking a good look at your feet at least 2 or 3 times a day. As you are doing this you need to pay very close attention to any forming corns or calluses. If you do see anything you need to get to your Dr. or foot Dr. immediately for treatment.
Remember you have been diagnosed with diabetes which will result in several changes in your life. Doing everything right with your feet is one of those very important changes.
Now the next step isn’t an option or suggestion but rather a must do. You need to wash your feet at least twice a day every day. Be sure to do this in warm water only as opposed to hot water. because many times our feet end up with a lack of feeling hot water could end up burning our feet before we even know it. Then we have to deal with that and remember sores of any kind are bad for us.
A big thing is to make sure you wash your feet very thoroughly and not soak them. Soaking feet tend to make them very dry. When your feet are very dry they have a tendency to start cracking. This is especially bad on the heels. And by now I’m sure you know that diabetes and feet just don’t need that aggravation.
I know all of this may sound so menial especially since not that long ago you likely just took stuff like feet for granted. Diabetes is a dangerous disease that can have some bad effects on life and every day living. However if you are careful and follow all the recommendations you stand a good chance at living a relatively normal life.
OK, lets help out with a few more diabetes foot care tips.
A Few More Tips
Another very important thing is making sure your feet are dry. Whether you have a shower or bath once done you need to take great care in making sure your feet are entirely dry. This means drying the tops, the bottoms and in between the toes. In between the toes is super important because leaving water in there could result in fungus building up. Once again all this is doing is asking for trouble.
Blood flow is imperative to keeping your feet healthy. You need to focus on keeping the blood flow as normal as possible. The best way to do this is through exercise. Even if you are at a desk job it’s still important to make this a priority.
You can rotate your ankles, wiggle your toes and do a lot of heal toes while sitting at the desk. This is just another one of those things you really want to do to lessen the chance of problems coming as a result of your diabetes.
So if you ever feel any numbness or sensitivity you better get in and get things checked out. Also you need to focus on regular appointments to have your feet checked. A good time to do this is on your regular 3 month diabetes check ups.
A Few Final Words
Like I said earlier I haven’t heard so much reference to foot care my entire life as I have heard in the last few months. Taking care of your body is always important but now that you have diabetes that importance has multiplied many many times. Feet are the major concern so that is the part of your body you need to focus on.
The things I’m telling you aren’t for you to just read and forget about. I am telling you because it is a fact that you need to take care of your feet and you need to listen to the little things I am trying to tell you.
I know myself and I’m sure you as well want to hang around on this fine earth for a long time yet. yes, I get it that someone touching, feeling and focusing on your feet might not be the most comfortable feeling. however for the most part it only takes a few seconds and then they move on.
A few uncomfortable seconds is okay with me if it helps prevent me losing parts of my feet or worst case my entire foot.
At the end of the day I am a newly diagnosed diabetic. The day I was diagnosed I thought I was given a life sentence. well right after that I decided that I want to be around for a long time so I m going to learn as much as I can about this disease.
