My Diabetes Journey-A Little About My Short Journey So Far

Just like a whirlwind came in. One day I was healthy as a horse and the next day I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and had to change my life entirely.


I say I was healthy as a horse but obviously I wasn’t because you don’t just wake up one morning and have diabetes. In this article I am going to try to take you on my short diabetes journey.


I’m going to tell you about how I was before diabetes, when I got diagnosed, how I treated it and how I am doing now.
Please understand that diabetes is a very serious disease and is the cause of many thousands of deaths yearly around the world. Also the estimate is that 350 000 000 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes.


Does this mean diabetes has to be a death sentence? Well lets just say if you don’t take care of yourself you could very easily become a statistic. I don’t say this to scare you but rather to help you.


A Few Years Ago:


About two or three years ago I wasn’t feeling great so I went to my Dr. He sent me for tests and when those came back my Dr. called me in and told me I had pre diabetes.


In my mind the word pre said it all. Pre just meant there was a chance I would get diabetes. We never think those things are going to come to fruition. We think pre means we have lots of time to deal with it.


So what did I do?


I just carried on with my bad habits. Eating anything I wanted which included chips, chocolate bars, soda pop and so much more.

Fast Forward A Few Years:


So now a couple years goes by and I actually feel great. I have got a lot of exercise, lost a few pounds but never changed my eating habits.


Would still eat two plates of spaghetti and bread like it was going out of style. Breaded chicken was my favorite and I justified it all because I was getting a bit of exercise and walking 20 000 steps a day.


Little did I know the damage I was doing to my body. Little did I know what I was setting myself up for. well soon I was going to find out I wasn’t quite as bullet proof as I thought I was.


A Not So Healthy Diet:


So before diabetes I ate anything I wanted and whenever I wanted. In this part of my article I will try to give you a look through the window of what I would eat on a typical day. Here goes:



  • 2 eggs
  • 4 pieces of bacon
  • 4 pieces of toast with butter and spreadable cheese.
  • A couple slices of cheddar cheese
  • One or two glasses of orange juice




These aren’t all together but rather examples of snacks I may eat through the day.


  • Chips
  • Pretzels
  • Chocolate bars
  • Candy
  • Ice Cream
  • Several soda pops
  • I think you get the picture


3.Lunch Time:


Cheese burger

Fries and Gravy

Bowl of soup

Soda pop


4.Supper Time:


  • Breaded chicken
  • Potatoes or noodles
  • Gravy
  • Soda Pop


And then after supper I would be right back into the snacks. I wouldn’t care whether they were good for me or not. Later on in this article I will give you a list of my typical day now that I am a diabetic.


I Guess I’m Not Bullet Proof:


So I guess its time to tell you what happened next.


First off I am 50 years old and things surely are not as they were say 10, 20 or even 30 years ago. Remember when I said I was feeling great. Well that was slowly starting to change but even though I wouldn’t admit to it there was one thing that clued me in.


I couldn’t get enough liquid into my body. In a typical evening I would drink 12 diet Pepsi, half a 2 liter of juice and a couple liters of water.


This was all within a couple hours. Well more than a couple, maybe like 4 or 5. Unfortunately I knew drinking that much was telling me there was something wrong.


The worst part of putting all that fluid into my body was how much I would have to pee. I would pee and barely sit down and it would start feeling like I had to go again already.


Even though I knew it wasn’t healthy but peeing every 45 minutes during the day was livable. The problem came into play during the night when I had to pee every 45 minutes. I was so tired and I needed to get sleep. So even though I was pretty sure what was going on I was still refusing to go to a Dr. Finally I just had to get some sleep so I finally gave in and went to see a Dr.


Well it was no surprise when she told me that I had diabetes type 2 and I would have to make a lot of lifestyle changes if I didn’t want to die.


That was the first day of the rest of my life. My diabetes journey was about to begin and I was not going to fall to this disease.


The Next Couple Of Weeks


The next 3 or 4 weeks were a whirl wind. Learning to check my sugars, Dr. appointments all the time. In some days more than one. Dr, foot specialist, Diabetic nurse, dietitian and this was all in one day.


It seems like every day or two I am going back for something. believe me I am not complaining. I got myself into this mess, so I will deal with it properly and along the way I will attempt to help as many people as I possibly can.


So I think the biggest change came in the form of changing my diet because damn I love food. I was on a mission to get my sugars from 19 to 20 to between 5 and 11. The easy part to all of this was taking the pills that were prescribed but I learned quickly that without changing my diet everything else was a waste of time.


So I cut out carbs about 90%. I eat way more veggies, eat more fruit, eat healthier bread, cut out candy, waffles, chocolate bars and so much more.


The only thing I drink now is a couple diet sodas and a lot of water.


A Much Healthier Diet




  • 2 boiled eggs
  • One thin slice of ham
  • 4 slices of fried tomato
  • 3 pieces of cheddar cheese


That’s a weekend breakfast. Here is weekday breakfast.


  • Half cup yogurt
  • Quarter cup granola
  • Three teaspoons of fruit (strawberries, black berries, raspberries and blueberries)
  • A level teaspoon of ground Flax seed




  • Some kale chips
  • raw vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds


3. Lunchtime:


  • Small salad with all types of veggies and a little salad dressing.
  • Cucumber slices
  • Couple pieces of Cheddar cheese
  • An apple


4. Supper Time:


  • This is just one example of supper.
  • Two pieces of skinless chicken
  • Cup of salad
  • Lots of vegetables


5.Evening Snack:


  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Pork rinds


So if you have compared both lists you see that the bottom one is way different from the first one. Those are the sacrifices I decided to make to get healthy.  Check Out Some Products


Did It Work?


First off let me tell you that changing the way I eat hasn’t been that bad. Its not like I go to sleep hungry or I don’t get enough food.


I have actually enjoyed changing my diet and adding some different flavors. In some cases I am even eating more. The thing is there is a big difference in eating two cups of mashed potatoes or two cups of fresh vegetables. Let me tell you how much of a difference.


As stated earlier I was at 19 to 20 with my sugars when I first was diagnosed. Well now I am at a consistent 6. So yes I absolutely feel great about the changes I have made.


What Happens From Here?


Well I am going to continue to eat healthy. I am going to start going to the gym in hopes of losing 50 pounds. That is a plan that will take a little longer because I have been told losing weight slower is better.
Ultimately I waited to long and have no one to blame but myself. However for a moment after being diagnosed I was ready to lay down and act like I just was given a death sentence. However after some thought I decided to fight back.


Also, I would like to make sure I help as many people as possible who are suffering from this disease. How I am going to do this is through my website and offering products when I can.

  1. Hi Dale. Great post! I am also Type 2. Here is my typical breakfast.

    2 fried eggs (I use either ghee or coconut oil)
    Sauteed spinach with garlic
    Smashed red potatoes
    Coffee, black

    These are all whole foods, none of it processed except for the fats. I have added more healthy fats to my diet.

    Overall, I have increased the protein and amounts of good fats I eat. And have cut way back on carbs, especially the highly processed ones like bread, granola.

    I also use an Instant Pot to make many one-pot meals like beanless chili and stews. I make a taco soup I like as well (it’s more like chili but with more liquid. I added my website link which is aimed a seniors looking to lose weight. I kept a journal of my 30 day diet reset program.

    • Thanks Glen. We are obviously on a similiar journey. I know that now i have to start on losing weight as I am looking at losing about 50 pounds.
